Badland wasp/hornet nest - Dolichovespula maculata

Badland wasp/hornet nest - Dolichovespula maculata
Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, Alberta, Canada
August 2, 2008
Dinosaur Provincial Park is in a desert-like badland section of Alberta (believe it or not we have small cacti there). This nest was built into a hollow of a coulee ridge. There is one insect on the surface of the nest shown in the tagged picture.

*** Correction *** this is Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. I got confused as I made a tour of several provincial parks at that time. The picture is taken on the northern face of the coulee which sandstone

nice shot
I've never seen a hornet's nest in such a place. It's remarkable how similar the nest looks, right down to the angle of the access hole, to one i shot a few months ago on a tree in Toronto!

How far up (from ground level) was the nest? And, I wonder what it's attached to...maybe a dinosaur bone?!

It depends on what you call ground level. This nest is built into a sandstone hollow of the cliff so it cannot be anchored on a root. This nest was about 25-30 feet above me. But I was down from the surface of the "ground" above a distance of about 75-100 feet and I was about 20-40 feet above the bottom of the coulee. The nest was between the size of a volleyball and basketball.
