Unidentified Crane Fly - Bittacus strigosus

Unidentified Crane Fly - Bittacus strigosus
Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska, USA
July 31, 2009

Moved from ID Request.

Mecoptera: Bittacidae
I believe that this is a scorpionfly, prob. genus Bittacus. See here

From the very few spp on Bugguide, to me it looks closest to B. strigosus
http://bugguide.net/node/view/167116/bgimage
but this is NOT a positive ID by any means.

Thanks a lot, David
I was definitely off on this one. I believe you are correct down to the genus. Strigosus does look very close for species too. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Great image!
Very nice shot, and a great find, too. Keep up the good work:-)

Thanks, Eric
He / she only allowed me one shot before leaving and this is what I was left with. It is definitely not something I see very often.
