Pastel Bug

Pastel Bug
Off Hwy 120, just west of Benton, Mono County, California, USA
June 18, 2009
Is this a pentatomid? It's subtle pastel colors and punctate sunken hairs are beautifully distinctive.

Found in arid scrub of Great Basin province.

I don't think the nymphs have been described,
So this is all very tentative and possibly just completely wrong, but my first instinct is Prionosoma podopoides.

Could be wrong, but the leg bands, pubescence, and habitat all seem consistent.

Moved from True Bugs.

Well, it's a nymph...
...and Pentatomidae seems likely, but I'm personally still trying to grasp the fine points of distinguishing them from shield-backed bug (Scutelleridae) nymphs. Sorry, wish I could be of more help (especially if you were also hoping to have this one identified for your talk tomorrow...). You could definitely safely assign it to the superfamily, Pentatomoidea. Hopefully, someone else will chime in with something more definitive.

Thanks again Harsi
Another careless error on my part...should of noticed it was a nymph by lack of wings! You're right, I want to use this in the talk...glad to be set straight. And I too think Pentotomidae is more likely, but I'll state that tentatively at talk :-)

After looking through all the likely penatatomid species...
...from California, I'm going to put my money on genus Euschistus. When you have a minute, check through these pages of nymph images and see what you think. Obviously there's a lot of variability and I'm only making a guess. It looks like =v= moved many of the images into that section of the guide, so it might be worth asking him his opinion on the matter...
