Hadromyia grandis - male

Hadromyia grandis - Male
Mount Arrowsmith, Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
August 30, 2009
Believe this is Hadromyia grandis, which occurs in B.C. Spur just visible on tibia. ID based mainly on that feature, wing veination (See Gerard Pennard's comments on image 141029) and similarity to Lynnette Schimming's photo:

Would appreciate if someone can confirm.

The HUGE black spur at the base
The HUGE black spur at the base of middle femur is very obvious. This confirms this as Hadromyia grandis .... male. See also on the image directly above.

Thanks, Bill
I noticed the spur & figured that's probably what it was, but wasn't sure if it was also a characteristic of other species.

Can't confirm for sure,
but it certainly seems likely.

Thanks, Lynnette
Found a reference to this occurring on Vancouver Island in an old BC Journal of Entomology going back about 60 years. When I did a photo search, yours were the only ones that came up. Great to see it was from somewhere so close. Unfortunately we only got the one shot of this one before it took off.
