Rhopalosomatid? - Rhopalosoma nearcticum - female

Rhopalosomatid? - Rhopalosoma nearcticum - Female
Pasadena, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA
August 7, 2009
Size: ~23mm
Had this filed as an Ichneumonid until I stumbled upon the guide page for Rhopalosomatidae, today. Seems to fit descriptions for the family and seems likely to be Rhopalosoma nearcticum. Came to my 60w incandescent porch light. Probably not the first time I've had these either, will have to review my files to see if I have any others filed under Ichneumons.

ouch!
We have these on our back porch in Mid Michigan and they only come out at night. They sting and it HURTS!! And itches like crazy! They can sting more than once, as I found to my detriment, so do be careful.

found this is California
My son found a caterpillar and put it in our butterfly catcher garden. today we found this insect flying inside the butterfly catcher. It had hatched out of one of two Chrysalis'. Assuming the other is the caterpillar. Is this "wasp" some sort of parasitic wasp? Can't find any real information on it...ie. does it sting..what does it eat...
Any help would be appreciated.

You probably
didn't find this one, they are cricket parasites. Please post your images if you want yours IDed.

Very likely an ichneumon or braconid
that parasitized the chrysalis.

Rhopalosoma nearcticum
Right on, this is Rhopalosoma nearcticum, the only species of this genus in the United States.

Great find!

Moved from Rhopalosomatid Wasps.
