I always check Meredon and Mallota first on these, and assume you've also eliminated these candidates. Never having seen one of these in the wild, I'm on a bit shaky ground. Have you seen this? http://www.canacoll.org/Diptera/Staff/Skevington/Syrphidae/Eristalis/Eristalis_Plate_1c.jpg

It's a lot more technical than I care to get, but may help in your ID.

Hadn't seen that link before. I had eliminated Merodon on the basis of wing veination. I enlarged it and it doesn't have that "sock-shaped" cell which I think is one of their charactersitics. Hadn't considered Mallota. Thought it was an eastern species. Haven't seen it on anything for BC as yet, but I have only lmited info on Diptera beyond family. Unfortunately have only got one photo of this guy so it may not be possible to get much in the way of ID.
