Goldcap Moss-eater Moth? - Ceratophaga vicinella

Goldcap Moss-eater Moth? - Ceratophaga vicinella
Okeechobee County, Florida, USA
October 24, 2009
I think this may be the Goldcap Moss-eater Moth, Epimartyria auricrinella #0001, but I don't see an example on BG for comparison. The specimen example on MPG is no help, but the live example is similar except the head doesn't have nearly the amount of "fluffy" tan hairs on the head that the moth I photographed had. I wish I'd taken a lateral view for comparison with the MPG live example.

Ceratophaga vicinella
I previously posted an ID of Doleromorpha porphyria (and supporting argument for same) for this moth, but I have been informed that Don Davis has identified it as Ceratophaga vicinella. I will defer to Don's diagnosis.

LOL, I keep finding them! I hope there is one there for me when I get there. Heppner lists them for March, May, June and October. But they are not really well known, so maybe we can add mid-February to the list.

Probably a Tineid sp.
Epimartyria are tiny, primitive northern species not found in Florida. It is to be hoped that your moth will be shown in a forthcoming MONA fascicle for Tineidae being worked on by Don Davis at the USNM. How soon it will be published is unknown.

Possible Tineidae
Thanks, Bob. I'll keep this one in my "unidentified moths" category for now and wait for your update on its ID.
