another flood pond occupant, but at least this one probably felt at home.

Further determination for this genus unlikely, but suggestions welcome :)

Keyed from Smetana (1988); a widespread eastern species.

of a cool beetle, but you are right, chances of further ID may be tough. Interesting (and maybe irrelevant since your specimen is from NJ :), literature still says 'questionable records' of this genus in AZ, and I have collected it twice in AZ.

it's pretty hard to imagine a Heloph. record from anywhere could be questionable... and, based on my oldwordly experience, they are much more amenable to gestalt-based ID than the mythology claims them to be
