Tarantula hawk mimic - Rhynchophion flammipennis

Tarantula hawk mimic - Rhynchophion flammipennis
about 6 miles north of Portal, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
August 13, 2004
Size: 30 mm
I thought that this was a tarantula hawk at first and was surprised after netting it. It's abdomen appears skinny at this angle, but is wide as viewed from the side.

Wing venation
Hi Robyn, would you consider adding a second, cropped image of the right wings? This is one of the few clear view of wing venation, which would be useful to have a close-up for the guide pages.

Excellent
Many thanks! I now have the Ophioninae page in particular updated with a comparison of wing venation for our genera.

Looks a lot like
Rhynchophion flammipennis

But there could be similar species, so please wait for a second opinion.

Certainly looks very similar
Certainly looks very similar (and in the same county!). I attempted to search the ichneumons, but missed this one.
