Tarantula hawk mimic - Rhynchophion flammipennis
about 6 miles north of Portal, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
August 13, 2004
Size: 30 mm
I thought that this was a tarantula hawk at first and was surprised after netting it. It's abdomen appears skinny at this angle, but is wide as viewed from the side.

Looks a lot like
Rhynchophion flammipennis

But there could be similar species, so please wait for a second opinion.

Certainly looks very similar
Certainly looks very similar (and in the same county!). I attempted to search the ichneumons, but missed this one.
