Wanderer - Cladius difformis - male

Wanderer - Cladius difformis - Male
Alameda County, California, USA
Size: ~1/2 in., 13 mm
January 14, 2010. The smaller of the two larvae collected on January 6: and kept in a cold room molted once in captivity and grew to 1/2 inch (13 mm). It left the food plant today and spent the day wandering inside the container, sometimes stopping for long periods. This photo shows it changing its mind.

The larva's gut is empty; when these larvae are feeding, a dark mass of feces is often seen through their skin.
