spider - Cicurina brevis - male

spider - Cicurina brevis - Male
Sharon, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
January 16, 2010
Size: 3mm
Found out on the snow.

long, curved conductor
The conductor on the male pedipalp is quite long and takes the shape of a big curved hook that is visible laterally -- I think you can just see a bit of it in your photograph.

The lost month...*
I just now filed this specimen away with label, etc. Never leave things sitting on your desk (alone because of the effect of daylight) -- it took me fourty-five minutes just to re-organize, refresh my mind, and make sure the correct specimens were being placed with the correct labels.

I've still got 7 specimens to go (three of which already determined) and then will jump on your remaining vials, Tom -- mostly Dixville.

* On the other hand, I've made a ton of improvements and fixes to my customized version of Mantis, the taxonomic database I use (I call my version "Mantis8").

Mantis for spiders?
I think you should rename the database Arachnid8:-)
I know what you mean about leaving vials hanging around for a while and trying to get the right tags written for them. Sometimes I get behind and have to figure things out, but I try to keep up to date if I can.

Kevin, these Cicurina are starting to get good representation. Thanks for doing all the technical work.

Cicurina brevis
This is C. brevis, so now we have our male. Perhaps the other two are also C. brevis -- I can't really tell until I detach the palp and can get a closer look.

I'll place this one at genus for now until Kevin has a look at the specimen.
