desert recluse - Loxosceles

desert recluse - Loxosceles
Desert Edge, Riverside County, California, USA
January 17, 2010
Found under a car seat that was dumped in the desert. There were two, but one ran down a hole in the sand.

I'm thinking this may be Loxosceles deserta, but Steve Lew's list also includes Loxosceles martha & Loxosceles palma in Riverside County.

Collected? (Just tell me, no,
Collected? (Just tell me, no, none, and I'll quite asking.)

:)
no, none, sorry! I don't think my mother would take kindly to me bringing these back to her house. What are the issues if any for transporting bugs across state lines and taking them on planes? Do you happen to know?

"3 oz. or less" :-)
"3 oz. or less" :-)

Technically you should be able to bring dead spiders on board in your carry-on luggage if transported in a 3 oz. or less container containing a personal care product (such as rubbing alcohol, i.e. hand sanitizer). But I wouldn't -- these days people seem skittish about most anything out of the ordinary.

In checked luggage, I'd pack them just as for shipment through the mail (small vials, cotton wads dampened with a bit of alcohol, and placed into a baggie along with some absorbent material in case of leaks). No problems with the state lines (that I can possibly think of).

I never check luggage
I guess if I get serious about collecting I'll just ship them to myself via USPS. That way I won't have to worry about any airport issues.

Nice!
Hey, did you move to Cali? Or just on vacation?

Just
a little break to get some sun.... and then it rained on us down there!

Haha!
How ironic! Sorry for laughing, but part of me couldn't help it. The other part is sad you got rained on, though. :) Leave the rainy state just to get rained on in another, lol. Sheesh.

just call me the Great White Buffalo Medicine Woman
When I worked for the forest service as a fire-fighter, the lookout used to call me the Great White Buffalo Medicine Woman. He said rain followed me everywhere I went. :)

..
The mystery deepens... firefighter and snake whisperer*. :-)

*Lynette sent me a link to her other pictures, which include a couple great shots of a sidewinder in which it looks like she must have been nose-to-nose with the little critter.

I don't know about that...
Though I was only a few inches from it for about 20 minutes it never hissed, blinked or even moved the entire time. There is something to be said for finding snakes in January! You can see the Sidewinder here.

A fire-fighter that brings rain
I hope they paid you extra for that, lol.

No
They blamed me for that. No fires = no overtime. :)

Lol!!
