Archilestes grandis male - Archilestes grandis - Male
Williamson County, Texas, USA
June 6, 2005
This male spreadwing perched on a stick or a leaf of water iris for hours a day. Though I later saw more than one individual, this is the only spreadwing species I've seen here. The brilliant lapis-blue eyes were obvious from a distance. The same pond/water complex was home to Kiowa Dancer (Argia immunda) and Desert Firetail (Telebasis salva) damselflies (both observed mating and egglaying), and Neon Skimmer, Widow Skimmer, Eastern Pondhawk, Blue Dasher, and Thornbush Dasher dragonflies early in the season, plus Common Green Darner and Roseate Skimmer dragonflies in the fall. The water complex is artificial, but supplied with collected rainwater only, and includes both shaded and sunny, swift and quiet areas of water.
