Small male lycosid - Pardosa californica - Male
San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA

Size: 5.5 mm
Ventral view of right palp. Looked most similar to Pardosa to me at first, but still working on it...

ID -
Dr. Beatrice Vogel was kind enough to take a look at these images and confirm the identification.

Too dark
Hi, Ken,

Have you got a lighter image? I can't see any of the palpal structures well enough to venture an ID.

Sorry, John -
I've replaced it with a brighter, but more distant shot. My scope set-up still isn't bright enough sometimes for small stuff. :(

I think this is Pardosa californica?

Similar (but opposite palp) to figure 118 in this paper?

Looks very close
I can see a little more detail now and I'd say you're on the right track. I can't see the details in your picture enough to say with certainty it's a match, but you're probably right about the ID. :)

Thanks for taking a look, John -
I wasn't convinced until I compared the other (left) palp under the scope to the corresponding figure in Vogel. This pic is still a little too dark... This one is a sister species to your hyperborea, I guess?

I think so
I've got a female P. hyperborea in the database, and hope to post some pictures of the live male this year (I've got some in alcohol - I'll try and post a palp picture one of these days). The female looks quite different from your female P. californica, though:
