Parnassius clodius - female

Parnassius clodius - Female
Upper Elk Creek Basin, Clearwater County, Idaho, USA
July 11, 2009
Size: i.5 inches
This was taken in mid-afternoon in the shade of an alpine fir. The butterfly is on a mountain hollyhock (aka streambank globe mallow) Iliamna rivularis. The female Clodius Apollo, Parnassius clodius was very nervous and I was afraid she would fly away before I got the shot. As I moved closer, she did leave. I did not see the sphragis until after I downloaded the picture.

Hi Gerry!
