L. capreolus
You can tell by the pale femora.

To this non-expert,
it looks an awful lot like the Reddish-brown Stag Beetle - Lucanus capreolus.



But take that with a fairly large grain of salt, and hold out for expert confirmation/correction. :)

 
Cool ...
I looked at the data map for that species and there are entries for every state in the eastern US except Indiana and a few others, so if you're right, it would nearly complete the picture.
