Buggety bug - Stictopleurus

Buggety bug - Stictopleurus
Alameda County, California, USA
February 1, 2010
Size: ~3/16 in., 5 mm
Found walking on top of lid of compost bin. It seems to have small ocelli between its compound eyes (?). In real life, the bug looked gray and brown, without the red and green in the photo.

Not exactly a wild guess...
I'd say I'm pretty confident in agreeing with Ken that this is a rhopalid. I suspect it is actually in genus Arhyssus. Suspicions are not enough to make an ID though, so you're probably still stuck waiting for expert confirmation. :-)

Just a wild guess...
I'm wondering if this could be one of the Scentless Plant Bugs (Rhopalidae).

Not this species, necessarily, but maybe something close?

I'm not terribly confident, though, so please hold out for expert confirmation or (more likely) correction.
