Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa tabaniformis - male

Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa tabaniformis - Male
Chew's Ridge, Los Padres National Forest, Monterey County, California, USA
June 17, 2007
I presume this is Xylocopa...perhaps tabaniformis? It was approaching a flower of the native shrub Keckiella breviflora (Scrophulariaceae), in an opening in montane mixed coniferous-oak forest at ~5000' elevation.

Wow...I actually got it!
At least to species :-) Of course, carpenter bees are easier to recognize than most mid-size bees. Thanks John.
