Bluet spp. - Enallagma durum - male

Bluet spp. - Enallagma durum - Male
Washington Boro, Susquehanna River, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 31, 2005
This bluet has not been identified by subscribers to PaLepsOdes so I wanted to post it in BugGuide to see what others think. So far, Big Bluet and Familiar Bluet are the two spp. that have been suggested. The Big has not been recorded in Lancaster County. Does anyone else have any thoughts? Thanks.

Ed Lam does show E. durum in eastern PA
don't know how far this is from you. Was it a large bluet? Big Bluet is big, though the size certainly overlaps with civile. From everything we can see we would have suggested E. durum even without your comments. See Lam, page 78.

Big Bluet
I heard from Blair Nikula and he feels that this is probably a Big Bluet but because the Familiar is so variable he doesn't feel comfortable calling it based just on photos. He feels the appendages are too short for a Familiar but still would lke to see the damsel in hand, especially since it would be a county record. I guess I will have to go looking for it again next summer!

Big Bluet....
Thanks so much for taking a look at the bluet. Lancaster County, where I saw this bluet, is fairly far from the range shown for Eastern PA in Lam's book but not so far from the range shown in Northern MD. As far as size is concerned I am very new to watching and identifying damsels so I am not a good judge of size. Sorry. Thanks again.

big bluet
Thanks very much. I wrote a note to Tom to ask if he would take a look at this bluet. I appreciate your help.

That's great -
Tom really knows his Odonata

Tom agrees that it looks like
Tom agrees that it looks like a Big Bluet. He wants me to write to Ed Lam and Blair Nikula to see what they say. I will let you know.
