Polygonia without fourth spot on forewing - Polygonia comma - male

Polygonia without fourth spot on forewing - Polygonia comma - Male
Russ Pitman Park, Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
February 6, 2010
Underside has a "question mark," so I assume it's Polygonia interrogationis. But top is lacking that fourth spot. Is that very odd?

Polygonia without fourth spot on forewing - Polygonia comma - male Polygonia - Polygonia comma - male

It is a Comma
Both species sometimes have the "wrong" mark; interrupted on the Comma; or, not interrupted on the Question Mark. It is a rule of thumb that usually works. Other details of this one are all typical of Polygonia comma.

Now finding a Comma in Houston, that in itself may be pretty unusual (???).

Moved from Commas, Question Mark.
