Erynnis on Mustard - Erynnis funeralis - male

Erynnis on Mustard - Erynnis funeralis - Male
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. elevation, Los Angeles County, California, USA
April 23, 2009
This specimen is obviously very worn -- there's almost no white fringe left on the edge of the HW! Given the overall dark color and the fairly indistinct hyaline spots with the adjacent lighter patch of brown on the FW, my instinct would be to label this one E. funeralis. Surrounding habitat is both chaparral (with plenty of Deerweed!) and mixed oak woodland, so both E. funeralis and E. tristis might potentially be found here.

Moved
Moved from Duskywings.

Thanks, Hartmut & Ron! I can now confidently enter E. funeralis in place of "Erynnis sp." in my catalog of species for the canyon. (From Hartmut's comments on other posts, it seems as though it would probably be safe to record the presence of E. tristis as well. This is just wonderful and has made me very happy this morning!)

Oh, and Ron, thanks for the heads up on the typo, or (ahem) "readership device" as you might say. :-)

Input
Even though the fringe on the HW is very worn, you can still see it grading into the color of the fringe on the FW. I would say E. tristis. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/454265/bgimage

Specimen in hand would of course be better,
but based on what I see here I still think this compares better with funeralis.
See especially the pages at Butterflies of America/ E. funeralis.

Harsi, I'm glad you posted these!
Based on the overall dark color, the smaller, less obvious hyaline spots, the lighter patch beyond the disk on the FW, I'm quite sure this is E. funeralis.

Agreed
Harsi, note minor typo in your caption.
