Callibaetis sp. maybe - Callibaetis ferrugineus

Callibaetis sp. maybe - Callibaetis ferrugineus
Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada
July 12, 2008
seen on the shore of an alpine lake.

Probably C. ferrugineus -- Lloyd Gonzales det.
his comment: "Probably not C. pretiosus. This photo may have been placed here because of similarities to the female pretiosus specimens in the guide, but male pretiosus imagoes do not look like this. Callibaetis imagoes display a high degree of sexual dimorphism, especially pretiosus (the only NA Callibaetis species in which the males have significantly fewer cross veins in the forewings than the females). Male pretiosus imagoes typically have hyaline wings instead of the dark irregular border (vitta) seen on the wings of these specimens. C. pretiosus also has an eastern distribution, probably centered around the southeastern US."

Moved from Callibaetis pretiosus.

great all-male scene!
