Lygus lineolaris

Lygus lineolaris
Bingley, Madison County, New York, USA
July 4, 2009
Size: 5 mm
Insect was on a purple-flowering raspberry in mid-afternoon along an old railroad bed that is now a hiking trail. Unfortunately I did not know it was there when I took the shot, so naturally I did not get any more detail. Nevertheless I believe the markings unambiguously identify it as Lygus lineolaris.

Are you sure of the ID?
Many species in the genus Lygus are similar in their markings.

No, I'm an amateur...
...but I spent a few hours comparing my shot to the shots in the database, and nothing else came close. I took a close look at the diagrams on the "Info" page, and the "Y" along with the very distinctive marking would seem to be unambiguous. I realize that there are some species with no photos, so if you think that there is any ambiguity at all you should move it up to the genus level.

There are 30 Lygus species other than L. lineolaris,
There are 30 Lygus species other than L. lineolaris, and we don't have a clue for determining ID only by patterns on the back yet. The images in the L. lineolaris page are determined by considering other factors like the length of antennae etc. So, if you are not sure of the ID, it would be appreciated to move the image to the genus page.
