BG2747 280-120a - Atomosia melanopogon
Gloster, Gloster Arboretum, Amite County, Mississippi, USA
July 3, 2005
Size: body length 7.4 mm.
While reviewing various Asilid plates on our Fotki site, I came across this specimen which was identified as Atomosia puella but had the diagnostic feature of A. melanopogon. See comment by the Lavers about this feature here (closed R5 cell in wing). I located additional photos of this specimen which showed the feature more clearly and sent them to Norm. He confirmed the ID of the specimen as A. melanopogon.

Be very
Careful diagnosing Atomosia by only the R5 cell. A. puella has R5 "usually" open. So closed-R5-cell dark Atomosia need features checked on the palpal hairs and the occipital setae to verify.
