Cranito ? - Limonia

Cranito ? - Limonia
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
October 23, 2005
Size: 14mm
Chilled specimen, would always turn onto back until it warmed up, never held still when upright. Lack of hairy scales, wing veination, and haltere structure all say Tipulidae. Never saw a proboscis like this before. Comments appreciated. Behavioral note: Found on a outside screen, it was constantly vibrating, similar to some orb-weavers when disturbed, until captured.

Crane fly
Female of Limonia (Geranomyia) species. One of the three groups of crane flies (Geranomyia, Elephantomyia, Toxorhina) that have proboscis in USA. The vibrating behavior you observed is common among Limoniinae crane flies (an up-and-down bobbing motion) This bobbing behavior was especially prevalent and rapid immediately after the fly landed or when a mild disturbance occurred. - Chen

Many thanks,
for the information. The long probocis was new to me, was under the impression that adult Tipulidae were minimal feeders. Assuming that this group might be nectar feeders. Always interesting to see something new. Even better when someone provides information that helps to understand the complexities of what was seen. Thanks again.

Thanks again (maybe),
Very nice site, and excellent links for researching. Now I'm compelled to incorporate the taxonomy into my basic lists (should be taking pictures instead). Your expertise is appreciated.
