Carpenter bee nectar robbing bush penstemon - Xylocopa tabaniformis - female

Carpenter bee nectar robbing bush penstemon - Xylocopa tabaniformis - Female
Dirt road along crest of Santa Ynez Mountains, midway between Santa Ynez Peak and Brush Peak, Santa Barbara County, California, USA
August 10, 2009
Size: ~16mm
The bee has landed at base of a flower, rather than entering through the opening at front. It's biting a hole at the base of the corolla here, through which it will "illegitimately" take nectar.
