I. Introduction

Bugs may seem interesting, but unimportant. Nothing could be further from the truth. They have huge effects- both good and bad- on our world. From pollination and pest control that make crops possible, to plant-feeding and disease-carrying that destroy them, and from forming vital links in the food-chain to causing extinction through predation and competition, and of course by feeding on us and spreading disease, bugs are constantly affecting our health, environment and economy in ways from minor to catastrophic.

With this in mind, I thought we should use our community of interested and observant amateurs to help professional entomologists deal with the most serious bug-related problem around: bugs which are spreading to new areas- causing disruption and damage as they go.

The problem:

Global travel and business have made the world smaller, and made it easier for species to get to places they don't belong. This can have serious consequences.

In an area where a species is native, other organisms have adapted to it, developing ways to get past its defenses to feed on it and keep it in check. Others have developed defenses of their own to keep the species from wiping them out.

When a species reaches a new area, the local ones don't have defenses against it, nor can they overcome its defenses. The newcomer takes advantage of this to spread rapidly and destroy native populations through feeding on them or out-competing with them for food and other resources. This is what is meant by an invasive species.

Invasive species can cause catastrophic environmental and economic damage, and are very hard to stop once established. The best way to prevent this is to keep them from becoming established in the first place. There are many scientists whose primary job is to find out about them and come up with ways to get rid of them before it's too late.

What We Can Do

We may not have the specialized expertise of the scientists, but we have an important resource here at BugGuide: a community of interested amateurs who are already observing areas throughout the continent and communicating what we find. All we need is information on what to look for, and we can be an unparalleled early-warning system.

In fact, we're already doing some of that already. I would like to propose using this page to coordinate efforts with scientists and organizations who are working on the invasive species problem. I would like to have people post updates here so there's one place to find the latest information. It would be like Beatriz Moisset's introduced species pages, but I would like information like new websites, changes in the addresses for old ones, updated contact information, and further developments about species already here, as well as new species to add.

Definition: To be considered invasive for this page, a species has to be increasing its range, and causing or having potential for significant environmental, economic or health damage. I'm also including species not currently found in our area, but which are being watched for due to potential for rapid spread and/or serious damage.

Florida, Pest Alerts are now at http://www.freshfromflorida.com/pi/pest-alerts/index.html. Also, a list of Florida Extension Service offices by county is at: http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/map/index.html.

Also, the Myllocerus weevil, http://bugguide.net/node/view/5212 and http://www.freshfromflorida.com/pi/enpp/ento/entcirc/ent412.pdf, is expanding its range in Florida and could be a threat to southern Texas and California also.

Changes made
I'm not sure if anyone actually uses this, but I try to keep it up to date in case anyone does

Statistics
It would be nice if we could access the statistics for each node. I am sure that there is a way. I am very curious, too.

....
Wow, this is a HUGE article! Awesome job!

It's Ready
I've been working on this for a while- and will continue to work on it- but now it's to the stage where I can use your feedback and participation.

Non-native species list addition..
Great Job Chuck!

I don't know if anyone else has suggested it, but we have two species of Eucaluptus longhorn beetles introduced and spreading here in California; Phoracantha semipunctata and P. recurva.

http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7425.html

They are attractive beetles which are actually "championed" by some native plant enthusiasts...There even have been suggestions that these pests were introduced on purpose with intention of decimating "invasive" Eucalyptus.

Jd

Non-native species
These two species are included in the list of non-native arthropods. Are they considered invasive, also?
