Renous Road, Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada

Size: about 30 mm ?
On alder shrub overhanging creek in coniferous forest. Seemed pretty small - about meadowhawk size.

male Northern Pygmy Clubtail - Lanthus parvulus
It matches up perfectly with the picture in Blair Nikula's book

. The small size, green eyes, black abdomen with the 3 yellow rings on the last segments, and bright yellow thoracic markings all match L. parvulus. Nice shots of a species I'm still looking for.

Lanthus parvulus
Thanks, Tom - and Stephen. It seems that Blair Nikula was a sort of pioneer of Odonate photography, in the days before digital cameras. I found a shot from 1996

Clubtail
This is a Clubtail. Unusual for the abdomen being so dark. There's a list of New Brunswick clubtails on this page:
