I just look at some of my passalid shots from Ecuador, and the only odd "structures" I noticed had eight legs: mites! Passalids usually have several that stay mainly on the beetle's underside.

Jim. I've added a new view. Unfortunately it's the best I've got. I had already released the beetle before I reviewed the images. I didn't notice the mites (if that's what it is) until then.
