From underground - Haplophthalmus danicus
Alameda County, California, USA
February 20, 2010
Creatures on a muddy plant-support stick just after it was pulled up from a potato bed. The isopod is about 1/8 inch (3 mm) long. I think it's a juvenile Porcellio scaber. Compare , found in the same location and also suspected as that species but not IDed. The red balls may be soil mites, order Oribatida.

Haplophthalmus danicus
Looks like Haplophthalmus danicus. The parallel rows of dorsal tubercles are just barely visible, but clearly there, and the eye appears to be composed of a single ocellus. It's a bit hard to say for certain but the right flagellum appears to be tapered, which is also consistent for the species. Nice find!
