Great Spreadwing - Archilestes grandis

Great Spreadwing - Archilestes grandis
Uvalde, Uvalde County, Texas, USA
November 12, 2005
I'm guessing Great Spreadwing. Anyone?

Definitely the Great Spreadwing male
_Archilestes grandis_, and a charming insect it is, too.

Elizabeth

Is that stripe yellow or white?
On my monitor, it looks white, but if it was a vivid yellow in reality, then that and a large size are diagnostic.

Here's a close-up of the thorax that shows the green and yellow clearly on my monitor. (I realize my failure to see it on your image could be a monitor difference.)

At the little pond where I'm taking pictures the most, the Great Spreadwing is much, much larger than the other spreadwings--though the males of both species have brilliant blue eyes.

It's yellow..
On my monitor it looks yellow albeit not as yellow as it was in person. It was also much larger than any damsel that I've photo'ed before.
