Over 1,000 species in North America, almost evenly divided between the two large supertribes Cecidomyiidi and Lasiopteridi. Supertribe Stomatosematidi contains four North American species and supertribe Brachineuridi contains 32 species.
Identification
The gall-forming "Gall Midges" belong to this subfamily.
Adults have Rs absent (except for the four species of Stomatosematidi) and basitarsus much shorter than second segment of tarsus.
