Cryptophagid - Myrmedophila americana

Cryptophagid - Myrmedophila americana
Fish Creek Park, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
February 14, 2010
Size: 2.3 mm
Sifted from a mound of sawdust/leaf litter from underneath a log, which might be a trash heap of a former ant nest.
My best guess is Cryptophagus.

Myrmedophila americana?
Hi Tim,
Wondering if you've considered Myrmedophila americana (LeConte)? I've collected a number from deadwood in NW Alberta and they are commonly associated with Formica ant nests- fitting your habitat. Species size 1.9-2.6 mm... Looking similar to Cryptophagus, yet has more sparse, less conspicuous vestiture of setae...

I'm leaning towards this species :-)

Looks good
Hi Charlene, I ran the specimen through the generic key by Bousquet (1989) and I too, came up with Myrmedophila americana. It was formerly under Cryptophagus (as C. blumi Blaisdell). Thanks for the ID.

Cool!
a good one for the guide :-)

yup
try(1) -- just in case...

Didn't key out :-[
Close to C. pilosus but it's definitely not that species as the pronotum is convergent towards the base (this one is not). The front angles of the pronotum are pointed... The elytral vestiture is interesting as the setae are short, of equal length, and decumbent, unlike the others pictured in the guide.

well, this might be good news as well:
it means your beetle is arguably & hopefully native -- rather than one of the globetrotters spread by commerce...
