Cilia propelled fork tailed pond creature (I assume its larvae)
Texada Island, British Columbia, Canada
February 14, 2010
Size: medium tadpole size
They look and congregate like a group of tadpoles from a distance, but move through the water using cilia. They have no legs. I found them in a small deep pond by the side of a gravel road. They have excellent eyesight and often darted out of the way as I tried to photograph them. They look pretty much the same on the bottom as on the top.

Fairy Shrimp
This is actually an adult Fairy Shrimp. They occur in vernal pools in early spring, when the ice starts melting.
