Silver-lipped Fly - Hemeromyia - male

Silver-lipped Fly - Hemeromyia - Male
Santa Paula area, Toland Park, Ventura County, California, USA
February 23, 2010
Size: 3 mm
The crazy jowls of silver should fix this pretty easily. Perhaps Ephydridae? I can't wait to shoot this guy with a 5X image on the sensor. 1X is not enough for this size.

Hemeromyia, male
This is a great addition to Bugguide! In North America this genus is restricted to the west. In some species males have these greatly enlarged genae with reflective silvery pubescence. Moved from ID Request.

novel fly
Great news! Thanks for the ID. I wish I could get better shots. They were actually quite common sunning on boulders. I'll return next week and collect a few. It was a day of curiosities, with a "piglet bug" also snapped.
