Dasymutilla? - Dasymutilla occidentalis

Dasymutilla? - Dasymutilla occidentalis
Archbold Biological Station - Lake Placid, Highlands County, Florida, USA
August 23, 2009
Size: 10mm roughly
I know there is a species of velvet ant named after Archbold, but this does not appear to be it after comparison to other guide shots. I don't know if it can be ID'd to species from these shots. I have yet to see a stationary velvet ant and the little buggers are heck to photograph!

Dasymutilla occidentalis
This is a very cool species, and the easiest Dasymutilla to identify simply by coloration.

It's exciting to see the Archbold fauna -- please keep the wasp photos coming in!

Moved from Velvet Ants.

Thank you
for the ID and no worries about the photographs; I have to process August through December still before I start taking shots for 2010!
