The following images are being posted in conjunction with speculation on this post that the mystery object may be a puparium of some kind. [In this photo, we're talking about the object that the spittlebug is sitting on.] Charley has put forth one possible theory that it could be a species of drosophilid (genus Cladochaeta) which develops exclusively in spittlebug spittle. All the photos shown here are of Clastoptera spittle masses on Artemesia californica. Many (if not all!) of these images may be frassed, but I'm hoping that they will provide a bit more material for discussion as to whether these are indeed puparia of some kind...

[Please note, there is more than one mystery object shown in these images. I think I photographed two different ones, but it was a bit hard to tell from my photos -- might be more than that.]
