Fishfly larva?

Fishfly larva?
Mendocino County, California, USA
February 21, 2010
Size: ~30 mm body length
Found in a very small creek (more like a flowing puddle) going across a trail. Looks most like a fishfly to me, but I have very little experience with these kinds of insects. It had many tentacle-like appendages on its abdomen, which I assume are its gills.

Thanks for the replies!
Unfortunately since I didn't know which characteristics were important in identifying these insects, I don't have any closer shots of the back end. I can upload a 100% crop of this picture, though.

Protochauliodes?
I get Protochauliodes from Merritt(1) but I'm not really confident. Have a closer shot of the rear end and the tubes and spiracles there? I am assuming the head markings count as a distinct pattern.

Not an expert, but
I'm inclined to agree that it looks like a fishfly larva. Alderfly larvae are superficially similar, but they seem to be considerably smaller.

Let's see if others are of the same opinion.
