giant rove beetle - Ocypus olens

giant rove beetle - Ocypus olens
El Dorado Park, Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California, USA
March 3, 2010
Size: 25-30mm
This is a rove beetle, right? I've seen rove beetles before, but those had always been tiny, leading me to falsely believe that all members of the family were tiny. This beast, on the other hand, was over an inch long and looked quite formidable. Many thanks in advance to whomever can assist in making an ID, if possible.

Ocypus olens
Thank you for the ID and comments. Quite a fascinating beetle.

Ooo this helps me too!
I found one just like this around Castaic Lake, also in LA County so I wonder if thats what mine is too :)

cool
That's a neat looking rove beetle. Very nice portrait!

looks like...
the introduced Ocypus olens from Europe. Perhaps one of our other 'European introductions' could confirm :-)

Definitely a Rove Beetle.
And I'll bet someone will be able to give you a genus or species.

EDIT: What the heck... I'll take a crack at it. I'm wondering if it might be the introduced "Devil's Coach Horse," Ocypus olens?

At any rate, it's something to consider until the experts check in. :)
