unknown CA bug emerges from larvae - Platypedia

Size: 2 cm body
Bug emerging from larvae that was found on a prickly pear cactus. I suspect based on its final form that it was a cicada, but I didn't know cicada were in California. It was also about half the size of any cicada that I've seen on the east coast. Plus, I've never heard cicadas in the trees around here.

Definitely a cicada of some variety.
Looks a bit like this one:



But that might be just because it's newly emerged. Wait to see what the experts have to say.
