Identification
Cicadetta floridensis is described as being a solid lime-green in coloration and like C. calliope usually has 6 apical cells in the hind wing.
The call is distinct from that of other "calliope" populations and has a strong clicking component in addition to the light "hissing buzz".
Range
mostly restricted to Florida
(1)
Most abundant in and along the scrub habitats of the Highland Ridge
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: There are several species in the Genus Cicadetta (Melampsalta).
Most of these taxa have been confused with and/or once considered to be populations of C. calliope, incl. "floridensis".
Cicadetta calliope (Walker 1850)
e. US
Cicadetta calliope floridensis (Davis 1920)
(syn. Cicadetta calliope floridensis)
NOTE: C. calliope floridensis has a very different call from other pop's of C. calliope.
Habitat
Scrub (oaks & mixed fields)
May overlap with C. calliope and differentiation may be difficult.
Food
Thought to be weeds (may be scrub oaks)
Life Cycle
Thought to be univoltine (possibly 2-3 yrs.)
Remarks
Although considered a subspecies of calliope in most literature, the call and habitats are distinct from C. calliope.
Often confused with the Green form of C. kansa (Ranges of these taxa and morphological characteristics in wing venation is distinct).
