Nectaring in Phacelia distans.
Keys to Volucella clarki in Curran (1930; see INFO page), later synonymized with Copestylum apiciferum.
I hope to find some more to get better natural shots.

I see you were near or at Elephant Tree on 5 March this year. So were Gene and myself--but we didn't see this beautiful syrphid. It really looks like one we saw at Hoberg Canyon, though, #335983, also in early spring! And we've seen it a few times at other places as well. I think I can safely call it this species.
