Ohlone Tiger Beetle - Cicindela ohlone

Ohlone Tiger Beetle - Cicindela ohlone
Santa Cruz area, Santa Cruz County, California, USA
March 6, 2010
Photographed on open compacted soil in coastal terrace grassland.

Habitat, location, and markings make the ID straightforward and unequivocal (see Pearson et. al.(1)).

This species was only discovered and described in the 1990's. It's threatened by habitat destruction through housing development, and is often in danger of getting crushed by mountain bikers, joggers, equestrians, and hikers.

ditto!
thanks for sharing this new species!

Stunning shots...
Of a rare and beautiful tiger beetle. Kudos!

Thanks Denis :-)
It was a delightful thrill to find and photograph.

BTW, I've added some interesting links and details to the Info Page.

[PS: Glad you commented...I hadn't seen your posts before. Wow! Many fascinating and diverse creatures, and every photo is exquisite! I love the Panorpa:-]

Thanks for the kind words...
Yours are equally stunning, diverse and fascinating! The link and info is extremely intriguing too. I am really taken by the possibility that this Tiger Beetle co-evolved with the "La Brea Tar Pits" fauna! Very cool...

Although I originally was concentrating on Odonata and Butterflies, Bug Guide has really opened my eyes (like many others I suspect) and now each new group I dive into is a whole new passion. I am now indeed a BIG fan of Tiger Beetles and have seen all nine species we have here in our neck of the woods and continue to seek them out year after year, but hope to go see some new ones not too far away (Maine or Mass), if time will allow. Maybe some day I will even make it all the way out there, and then there will be lots to see for the first time...Cheers!
