gall -
Asteromyia tumifica
Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
I found these galls on 2-28-10, and took them home. The wasps emerged on 3-13-10.

I think you were right about this being goldenrod, Tom--these look like a good match for
Asteromyia tumifica
galls.

I think it was goldenrod
but I didn't take a sample home other than what you see to check it out. Thanks for digging up the info and identifying these galls!

Species?
There are many species of goldenrod. Any idea which this is? I have never seen this type of goldenrod galls or stems of this color and aspect. I haven't seen this kind of galls in the goldenrod gall literature either; but, of course, this is far from complete.

It could be something other than goldenrod. There were now leaves left on the dead stalk, but it had the dried up plume of flowers on top just like a goldenrod. I'll edit the title and take the word goldenrod out.
