Numbers
6 spp. in a single genus north of Mexico(1), ~110 spp. (of which 60 Holoparamecus and 26 Merophysia) in 12 genera worldwide(2)
Range
Holoparamecus (our only genus) is cosmopolitan, the remaining genera are distributed in warmer parts of the world, esp. around the Mediterranean(2)
