Every summer there's a small population of these around my kitchen sink, but they disapear in the winter. This scout showed up yesterday and seems to be very early.

Odorous house ant
Dolichoderinae: Tapinoma sessile. One of the few native ants to have an "official" English name. A recent study indicates there may be some cryptic speciation going on in this taxon, along regional lines.

thanks
Thanks James. The English name doesn't make me feel any better about sharing my kitchen with these creatures. I found a discussion of the species at http://mississippientomologicalmuseum.org.msstate.edu/Researchtaxapages/Formicidaepages/genericpages/Tapinoma.sessile.htm
