Greater Bee Fly - Bombylius major - male

Greater Bee Fly - Bombylius major - Male
Fremont, Alameda County, California, USA
March 15, 2010
Size: ~2cm
Never seen such a hairy Bee Fly :)

I was so excited to see my 1st Bee Fly of 2010 that I forgot to measure it. Body was probably
1 cm long.

3/17/10 Note: Measured probably the same fly as shot today. Body 20mm, Proboscis 8mm, Wingspan 29mm.

Moved
Moved from Flies.

Nice work, Alice
Fine specimen, too.

Greater Bee Fly?
Do you agree?

Yes, Greater Bee Fly
Should have said that earlier.

Wing pattern looks right,
and its edge is sharply defined (not blurry). Second vote for B. major.
