This gives some idea of the snow in early spring, after it's been melting for a while. Spider-sized crevices and caves form among the remaining ice crystals, creating an intricate labyrinth in which these spiders are quite at home as they hunt for springtails. Many females build tiny sheet webs in the snow at this time of year; but others, like this one, can be found wandering around.
