Generic epithet from Greek πᾶν + δῆμος meaning "all the common people." Hübner named Syndemis (all the people together) in the same work.
Numbers
About 60 described species, mostly from Madagascar. Six species in North America, two introduced from Europe, all of which occur in British Columbia, according to (1). However, there are nine species in Bugguide.
